Settled between the Raleigh Convention Center and the historic Boylan Heights neighborhood (Downtown South) sits a building constructed in 1957. You’ve probably driven by, but never noticed the building at 518 W. South St. Acclaimed architect F. Carter Williams, FAIA, designed the building for the First National Bank. At the time, it was the first 'drive-thru' bank in Raleigh.
Greg Kelly started search for a new location to operate his company modbox USA. With the help of commercial real estate agent Carter Worthy, Greg and Laura Kelly set out to find the perfect building with some historic character. After only a few minutes at the 40's Gulf gas station and 50's drive-thru bank, they said, yes, this is it! With a love of craft beer, and having started the Percolator Coffeehouse in Greenville, NC in the mid-1990s, Greg and Laura decided to start Vault Craft Beer. Thus preserving the history and mid-century modern architecture of this little drive thru bank.
Greg met Vault business partner Erik Kern during his biweekly trips to pick up fabricated mailboxes. Greg and Erik would talk about life, business, and yes Vault. A friendship was formed. Original vellum drawings (NCSU Archives), pencil drawings, and B&W photos were used to guide restoration. With a fresh coat of paint after installing new floor-to-ceiling windows (they had been boarded up), and re-building the canopy, the building's modern aesthetic was brought back to life!
LITTLE BANK
By restoring and preserving this historically relevant building, Vault's goal is to serve as a community gathering place for another 60 years!
Great draft selections, rotating often. Cooler is also well stocked, wines also. Regular food truck schedule is nice too!
